INTRODUCTION

Howick Primary School has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Student published by the Minister of Education.  Copies of the Code are available on request from the school or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at http://www.minedu.govt.nz

Howick Primary School accepts International Students under these conditions:

  • Students must apply and be accepted to be granted a place at the school.  This grant of a place is at the discretion of the Principal and the Board of Trustees and is limited by the number of vacancies at the time.
  • We give priority to those students who are in New Zealand for a full school year, as these students have the least access to education in their own country.
  • We accept children between the ages of 5 and 11.  There is no provision made for children before their fifth birthday or after the year in which they turn 11.
  • The student must live with a parent.
  • Students must hold a student permit/visa to study long-term at the school.
  • Students who are part of an organised group may study on a visitors visa at the school. Organised groups can only study for short periods of up to one month. Only short-stay group students may live in a homestay situation i.e. up to one month.
  • The enrolment of the student is subject to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students.

Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website at http://www.immigration.govt.nz

All long-term students are placed in a regular classroom and they receive additional support with the learning of English in small groups with the ESOL teacher.
